Trichocereus aff. coquimbanus | ‘Quiso Coquimbano’ | Live plant

(syn. Echinopsis aff. coquimbana)

Get ready for another cool cactus rarity, with this Trichocereus aff. coquimbanus – cloned from our mother plant in sunny Spain! Affinis (aff.) indicates that this plant is considered to be closely related – but not identical – to the species name which immediately follows it. Furthermore, it may in fact be a hitherto undescribed, new species – although there’s not enough data to confirm this at the time of writing. Available as live, well-rooted plants.

A rare, columnar cactus from Chile’s Coquimbo region (for which it is named), Trichocereus coquimbanus is considered by many cactus afficionados to be extremely close to Trichocereus chalaensis, Trichocereus deserticolus, Trichocereus fulvilanus and Trichocereus nigripilis/spinibarbis. It’s therefore currently or previously synonymous with a bewildering array of botanical names, including Cactus coquimbanus, Cereus breviflorus, Cereus chilensis nigripilis, Cereus coquimbanus, Cereus nigripilis, Echinopsis coquimbana, Echinopsis nigripilis, Trichocereus chiloensis var. nigripilis, Trichocereus coquimbanus var. nigripilis, Trichocereus nigripilis and Trichocereus serenanus.

Known informally as ‘Quiso Coquimbano’, this fiercely spiny species reaches up to ninety or so centimetres tall, producing lovely, white-to-whiteish flowers which bloom during the day and the night. Differentiate it from Trichocereus nigripilis by means of its flower!

Give this one a little less water than, say, Trichocereus pachanoi or other Trichocereus from South America. Plant in full sun to light shade, in a well-drained, mildly acidic to mildly alkaline soil mix (we use roughly fifty-percent perlite in ours) and fertilise lightly a few times each year.

Grab this chance to add another rarity to your garden!
