Other Questions

This page collates a few common questions (such as “Do Trichocereus cactus produce fruit?”) that we didn’t feel fit on the other information pages. Please contact us if you have a query we’ve not yet covered and we’ll get it added here!

Can I write to you in my own language?

We are happy to answer your emails written in Catalan, English, and Spanish. For any other language, you will have to forgive the vagaries of Google Translate!

Will you arrange a special order for me?

Good question! Yes, we are always happy to hear from you with special requests regarding your “wants” lists…

Using our extensive network of reliable growers, collectors and wholesalers, we often order-in products especially for our customers. Examples of this include sourcing specific rare items for dedicated collectors of Lophophora williamsii varieties, Trichocereus cactus hybrids and other plants. Feel free to email us via the contact page!

Does Freaky Cacti grow all of the plants offered for sale on the website?

Good question! At present, all the plants we offer for sale are lovingly and organically grown by our team. Furthermore, they’re guaranteed to be clearly and accurately labelled (to the best of our ability – cactus identification can be somewhat nebulous and official descriptions often change over time!) when you receive them.

Where does the seed you sell come from?

We’re often asked where the seed that we sell is sourced from, so here’s a little more on that… In a nutshell, we prefer to produce our own seed where possible (and are constantly working on expanding this production), but also deal with some of the most knowledgeable, reputable and well-established specialist growers and wholesalers from around the world (as well as a few smaller, newer – yet in no way less dedicated – sources).

Even though it can sometimes prove costlier, we love doing business with such folk, mainly because of their true expertise, integrity and moral conviction in spreading high-quality and accurately-identified seed to all who would grow it. And don’t forget all the rare species we’ve managed to obtain for all of you serious collectors!

Trust us when we tell you that all of the seed we offer is certain to be the best available on the market – some of our suppliers literally wrote the book on their particular area of botanical expertise!

Can Freaky Cacti guarantee seed viability?

While we do test the majority of our seed (as well as list the year of harvest where known) we hope you understand that we cannot guarantee seed viability – and anybody who claims they can be telling porkies! Please appreciate that there are many variables involved with regards to getting a seed to germinate – the skill of the cultivator, environment, age of seed, genetic quality of seed, season, etc.

In an attempt to illustrate our dilemma when it comes to seed viability: we’ve received positive feedback regarding germination rates for some of our seeds – but also several complaints that they didn’t germinate at all!

We don’t currently produce much of our own seed, but everything we buy in comes from globally-respected growers and collectors who have earned their reputations over many years. It’s also all seed which we obtain primarily to grow out ourselves, so you know we’re putting our money where our mouth is! While this does mean that we can only go on the information provided by them, we’re confident in our choices of supplier and the products that we offer.

That said, if you feel that the quality of any seeds you’ve purchased from us is somewhat lacking, please do let us know and we’ll see if there’s anything we can do. We want you to be happy and we want you to grow whichever species you desire!

I’m unsure of the legality of a product in my country, can you advise?

One important condition of using this website is that you are doing so for legal purposes and are not trying to order anything which you know or believe to be illegal or otherwise restricted in your country of residence. Before making your first order with Freaky Cacti, we suggest you read all of our Terms and Conditions and our Privacy Policy, at a minimum.

To the best of our knowledge, everything which we sell is entirely legal in the countries which we cater to, provided it is used for legal purposes. However, it can be difficult for us to stay up to date with all the global legal regulations, so please contact us before ordering if you’re unsure and we’ll check whether we can assist.

We’ve added notices of any known country restrictions on a per-product basis and removed the “Add to Basket” button where applicable. Let us know if you see anything sold on our site which you believe should not be sold to residents of countries not yet listed.

Please take personal responsibility and don’t try to order anything you shouldn’t – we are aware of VPNs and other cloaking techniques! Any such orders which somehow make it through will be cancelled and refunded manually should this occur.

Is it easy to grow Peyote from seed?

Lots of people ask us “Is it easy to grow Peyote from seed?”, to which we’re glad to reply “Yes, it is”! We grow all of our Lophophora williamsii (and other) cactus seed using variations on the “Takeaway Tek“. Here’s the version we’re using currently; it’s cheap, low-maintenance and results in (for us at least) improved germination rates for many cactus species. Grow cacti!

Are Lophophora and Trichocereus toxic?

As with many other cacti and plant species, some Lophophora and Trichocereus cacti contain chemicals called alkaloids, so should be kept out of reach of small children and animals. Although unlikely to cause serious injury or death, accidental ingestion of these cacti may cause nausea, and vomiting, as well as variations in blood pressure, heart rate and breathing. Please don’t eat these beautiful cacti!

What is the legal status of Lophophora and Trichocereus cacti?

As many Lophophora and Trichocereus cactus species contain alkaloids, some countries consider their possession illegal in one form or another. Please note that it is your responsibility to confirm any seed or plant you order from Freaky Cacti is legal in your country, as it’s impossible for us to keep up with the entire global legal framework!

We will only sell you these beautiful cacti for ornamental purposes, and will only ship to countries which permit this usage. In light of this, please do not ask us any questions relating to illegal activity of any kind – any such requests will be ignored, and we may refuse to do business with you in future. We bear no responsibility for your actions!

Do Trichocereus cactus produce fruit?

It’s a fact that the majority of Trichocereus cacti do produce fruit, which is apparently somewhat akin to a “Dragon Fruit” in taste and texture (flavours reportedly range from quite mild to sweet). Commonly vibrant shades of red, green or yellow on its outer surface, mature Trichocereus fruit splits to indicate its ripeness, exposing its white-to-cream-coloured flesh to all. Top tip: We’re told that Trichocereus fruit taste sweeter when the inner flesh is allowed to turn slightly brown over a few days before harvesting!
