Cactaceae

This attribute collects all the members of the Cactaceae family – commonly known as cacti – which we currently stock in the Freaky Cacti shop. Numbering one-hundred-and-thirty-nine genera, made up of almost two-thousand species, cacti are flowering plants which are mostly native to countries within North and South America. As you’ll notice browsing our listings, we primarily sell a lot of Lophophora and Trichocereus species and hybrids, but also cool plants and seeds from genera such as the Astrophytum, Cereus and Pereskiopsis too.

The Cactaceae family is further classified into four subfamilies, dependent on various traits (including ecological niches, geographical distribution and physical characteristics): The Cactoideae, Maihuenioideae, Opuntioideae and Pereskioideae. Whichever subfamily they’re in, cacti are typically spiny, “stem-succulent”, entirely without or with reduced leaves, and produce large, gorgeous flowers with numerous stamens.
