Trichocereus bridgesii cv. ‘Malta’ | ‘Achuma’, ‘Bolivian Torch’, ‘Wachuma’ | Live plant

(syn. Echinopsis lageniformis cv. ‘Malta’)

Freaky Cacti proudly offers these nice Trichocereus bridgesii cv. ‘Malta’; ‘Bolivian Torch’ cacti originating from a mother plant grown in Malta. Grown organically outdoors, these fast-growing and sought-after cacti are available as rooted plants of various sizes. This is probably our favourite species of the genus and it’s easy to grow too (following a similar approach as for ‘San Pedro’, ‘Peruvian Torch’, etc.).

Found growing naturally in the high deserts of Bolivia, bridgesii (synonymous with Echinopsis lageniformis and closely-related to the famous ‘San Pedro’, or Trichocereus pachanoi, and ‘Peruvian Torch’, or Trichocereus peruvianus) is an impressive columnar cactus, known variously by the indigenous populations of Bolivia as ‘Achuma’ or ‘Wachuma’ – although these names are sometimes also used to describe pachanoi and peruvianus too. ‘Bolivian Torch’ can grow up to around five metres / twenty-six feet tall, and up to twenty centimetres / eight inches in diameter. It has evenly spaced spines that can grow up to roughly eight centimetres / three inches long. Although similar in many ways to its relatives in the Trichocereus genus, bridgesii is a much skinnier type than most, which is also slightly more prone to rot if over-watered.

Plant Trichocereus bridgesii ‘Malta’ in a well-drained soil mix (more minerals, less organic matter) in USDA Climate Zones ten, eleven or twelve (lower works too if you have somewhere to overwinter them). Provide sufficient sunlight and enough room for healthy root growth, greatly helping them to grow vigorously. Essentially, don’t overwater this species and avoid frosts and you should find it nice and simple to keep your plants healthy and happy!
