Trichocereus thelegonus f. cristata | Live plant

(syn. Cereus thelegona, Cereus thelegonus, Echinopsis thelegona, Echinopsis thelegonus, Soehrensia thelegona, Trichocereus thelegona)

Trichocereus thelegonus f. cristata is a beautiful crested form of the Argentine cactus Trichocereus thelegonus (synonymous with Cereus thelegona, Cereus thelegonus, Echinopsis thelegona, Echinopsis thelegonus, Soehrensia thelegona and Trichocereus thelegona). This one seems to be fairly rarely available on the European collector’s circuit, hence we’re especially glad to offer it here in our shop!

A branching, columnar species native to the north-west of Argentina, thelegonus has been observed growing in the provinces of Jujuy, Salta and Tucumán, at between approximately five-and-a-half-thousand and one-thousand-one-hundred metres above sea level. Reaching a maximum diameter of around centimetres and a mature height of just over two metres, this distinctive species bears yellow-brown-reddish spines up to two-and-a-half centimetres long. It blooms at night, producing long, white (self-sterile) flowers and round, reddish fruit (wih a diameter of roughly five or six centimetres).

As with similar, related cristate cacti, such as Trichocereus pachanoi f. cristata, Trichocereus thelegonus f. cristata really mangles its standard species description, growing as a twisted mass of fanning, brain-like mutoid coral, making it a most desirable and distinctive plant. All the plants of this type which we sell originate from one mother plant, which we first obtained as a grafted specimen from an Italian collector.

Care-wise, we treat our Trichocereus thelegonus f. cristata much the same as our cristate pachanoi, Trichocereus spachianus, etc. Basically, watering about half as frequently as we do the standard forms of these species, and a little more sparingly. We also lightly fertilise our plants one, two or three times over the warmer months, tailing off watering over the colder, damper winter months in an effort to avoid encouraging rot or other unwanted issues.

An absolutely breathtaking mutant cactus that deserves a home with you!
