Trichocereus thelegonus | Live plant

(syn. Cereus thelegona, Cereus thelegonus, Echinopsis thelegona, Echinopsis thelegonus, Soehrensia thelegona, Trichocereus thelegona)

We’re so relieved to finally have the Argentine cactus Trichocereus thelegonus (synonymous with Cereus thelegona, Cereus thelegonus, Echinopsis thelegona, Echinopsis thelegonus, Soehrensia thelegona and Trichocereus thelegona) in our collection! It seems to be only rarely available on the European collector’s circuit, hence we’re especially glad to offer it here in our shop. All the plants of this type which we sell originate from two mother plants, which we first obtained from a European cultivator. We also sell a cristate (crested) form of this species too.

A branching, columnar species native to the north-west of Argentina, thelegonus has been observed growing in the provinces of Jujuy, Salta and Tucumán, at between approximately five-and-a-half-thousand and one-thousand-one-hundred metres above sea level. Reaching a maximum diameter of around ten centimetres and a mature height of just over two metres, this distinctive species bears yellow-brown-reddish spines up to two-and-a-half centimetres long. It blooms at night, producing long, white (self-sterile) flowers and round, reddish fruit (with a diameter of roughly five or six centimetres).

Care-wise, we treat our Trichocereus thelegonus much the same as our Trichocereus pachanoi, Trichocereus spachianus, etc. Basically, plant in a well-drained, mildly acidic to mildly alkaline soil, watering only when the top few centimetres of soil is completely dry to the touch. We also lightly fertilise our plants one, two or three times over the warmer months, tailing off watering over the colder, damper winter months in an effort to avoid encouraging rot or other unwanted issues.
