Trichocereus tarijensis v. poco cv. ‘Skink’ | Live plant

(syn. Cereus poco, Echinopsis poco, Helianthocereus poco, Lobivia formosa v. poco, Trichocereus narvaecensis, Trichocereus poco, Trichocereus poco v. fricianus, Trichocereus totorillanus)

We’re pleased to offer this nice form of Trichocereus tarijensis v. poco cv. ‘Skink’, which we originally obtained from a Czech nursery. These cacti are available from our shop as healthy, well-rooted plants.

Trichocereus tarijensis v. poco has been described under several botanical names, so it is or has been synonymous with Cereus poco, Echinopsis poco, Helianthocereus poco, Lobivia formosa v. poco, Trichocereus narvaecensis, Trichocereus poco, Trichocereus poco v. fricianus and Trichocereus totorillanus.

Initially growing with a semi-globular-semi-columnar habit, possessing approximately fifteen to twenty fine, sharp spines, Trichocereus tarijensis var. poco really asserts its individuality once it reaches between fifty to seventy-five centimetres / twenty to thirty inches in height, as the spination gets thicker, more crooked and twisty (as well as roughly doubling in number). Rather variable in form, such plants may possess anywhere between twenty and thirty-ish ribs. Their blooms – normally between ten and fifteen centimetres / four and six inches long – are commonly orange through to red in colour – although beige, peach, pink and white (respectively) hues are also reported.

We plant our poco plants in a well-drained, mildly-alkaline soil, watering less than, for example, their Peruvian relatives (such as Trichocereus pachanoi; ‘San Pedro’) and fertilising lightly once or twice each year. Given its native environment in Argentina and Bolivia, this is also a cactus which should be kept away from frost, as it’s a little less cold-hardy than pachanoi, etc.
