Trichocereus taquimbalensis | Live plant

(syn. Echinopsis tacaquirensis subsp. taquimbalensis, Echinopsis taquimbalensis, Trichocereus tacaquirensis subsp. taquimbalensis)

It took us a while, but we’re happy to now be offering the magnificent Trichocereus taquimbalensis (syn. Echinopsis tacaquirensis subsp. taquimbalensis, Echinopsis taquimbalensis)! Available as live, well-rooted plants.

Reportedly often available commercially mislabelled as Trichocereus werdermannianus (with which it’s probably quite closely related), the original Trichocereus taquimbalensis species type originates from Bolivia’s Taquimbala province, but there is also a recognised/disputed (cacti nomenclature is frequently complicated!) variety, var. wilkae, originating from Tupiza, Bolivia. To create even more confusion among amateur cultivators, currently-accepted taxonomy (as always with the Trichocereus, controversially!) combines taquimbalensis and Trichocereus tacaquirensis into one species, taking the latter’s name.

A bright-green, erect columnar cactus forming ribbed stems (six centimetres to fifteen centimetres in diameter and reaching up to roughly two-and-a-half metres tall), taquimbalensis is a fairly hardy and heavily spined (hard, brown-yellow-grey and up to seven or eight centimetres long) species. Gorgeous white (occasionally light pink), tubular blooms grow to around twenty-three centimetres in length. Unusually when compared to many of its genus, these flowers appear during the daytime.

This species occurs naturally in USDA Hardiness Zones 9-11, where it grows on dry slopes and sparse forests at between 2,800 and 3,100 metres. It’s fairly easy to grow whether indoors or outdoors, provided you’re in a suitable climate zone and use a mildly acidic to mildly alkaline soil mix with good drainage (add some perlite and/or pumice, or similar). Situate your plants somewhere in full sun to partial shade, but be careful to avoid sunburn, as this species can is somewhat sensitive in that respect comparative to its peers. Water in average (modest) amounts and space plants approximately a metre apart to allow them enough room to grow to their mature size.

Another cool Trichocereus species to add to your cactus garden – limited stocks!
