Trichocereus pachanoi cv. ‘NNP’ | Live plant

(syn. Echinopsis pachanoi cv. ‘NNP’, Trichocereus macrogona subsp. pachanoi cv. ‘NNP’, Trichocereus macrogona var. pachanoi cv. ‘NNP’)

This listing is for Trichocereus pachanoi cv. ‘NNP’ – cloned from a mother plant we sourced from Hungary, of all places! Available as live, well-rooted plants.

Originally obtained from a generous Hungarian grower, Trichocereus ‘NNP’ is a great example of Trichocereus pachanoi (‘San Pedro’; synonymous with Echinopsis pachanoi, Echinopsis macrogona subsp. pachanoi and Trichocereus macrogona var. pachanoi) is a much-loved columnar cactus found naturally in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador and Peru. A native of the Ecuadorian and Peruvian Andes Mountains, where it prefers an altitude range of roughly two to three thousand metres, pachanoi has been used for more than three thousand years by humans, variously as an ornamental, for religious divination and in traditional medicine (human and animal).

Trichocereus pachanoi is a light to dark green cactus, growing up to twenty feet tall (although the highest recorded was forty feet!) under ideal conditions in USDA Zones 8-10. Its stems, usually forming multiple branches from the plant’s base, grow up to fifteen centimetres in diameter and generally possess six to eight ribs. It’s closely related to the ‘Bolivian Torch’, Trichocereus bridgesii.

Pachanoi’s origins in the Andes enable it to withstand far lower temperatures than can many other cacti and it’s consequently easy to grow indoors and outdoors in most areas. Averaging around thirty centimetres / twelve inches of new growth per year (in an ideal climate), pachanoi can be propagated from seed or cuttings, requiring simply a fertile, free-draining soil mix (we use roughly equal parts perlite and soil in ours), regular but moderate watering and the occasional dose of fertiliser. Don’t forget to avoid frosts!

‘NNP’ is yet another elegant cactus variety which we can’t help but recommend to any and all cactus collectors! Join the product waiting list if it’s out of stock when you visit.
