Freaky Cacti is proud to sell the amazing mutant cactus, Trichocereus spachianus f. monstrosa (the ‘Monstrose Golden Torch’) – available as live, well-rooted plants!

Increasingly popular in Europe (but apparently rather rare in other territories, such as the United States of America), this great monstrose cactus form results in magnificent, felted plants which also differ from the standard spachianus species form by the wonderful diamond/lattice-like rib bulges covering its columns. All the plants we sell of this type are cloned from our original mothers.

The standard type of Trichocereus spachianus (synonymous with Cereus santiaguensis, Cereus spachianus, Echinocereus spachianus, Echinopsis santiaguensis, Echinopsis spachiana, Soehrensia spachiana, Trichocereus manguinii, Trichocereus santiaguensis, Trichocereus shaferi, Trichocereus spachianoides and Trichocereus trichosus) is a columnar cactus species which is native to Argentina. It’s often informally known as ‘Golden Column’, ‘Golden Torch’, ‘Torch Cactus’ and ‘White Torch’. Light-to-dark-green in colour, spachianus forms cylindrical stems from its base, which grow to approximately two metres tall, with a mature diameter of roughly six or seven centimetres. These stems are dotted with grey-brown-red-yellow spines which can reach up to two or three centimetres in length. Impressive, white to whitish flowers – up to roughly twenty centimetres in diameter – bloom at night (although often stay open for at least part of the next day), between late spring and early autumn.

This is a popular species for ornamental cultivation and there’s also cristata (crested/cristate) and variegated forms which are occasionally offered on the European collector’s market (including here in our shop); Trichocereus spachianus f. cristata and Trichocereus spachianus f. variegata. There are also several commercial hybrids involving this plant and it’s commonly used as a grafting stock for other, slower-growing cactus species too.

Easy to grow outdoors in USDA Hardiness Zones 9-11 (or else indoors or under glass), spachianus‘ main requirements are free-draining, mildly-acidic to mildly-alkaline soil plus sufficient water, light and nutrients. Situate somewhere in full sun to partial shade, at least eighty centimetres apart (to allow them room to comfortably reach their mature size). Water only when the top few centimetres of soil are completely dry to the touch – and avoid temperatures below -5°C!
