Trichocereus smrzianus ‘RH4417’ | Live plant

(syn. Echinopsis smrziana)

We’re happy to have this rare Trichocereus smrzianus ‘RH4417’ in our catalogue, originating from material collected by Swiss seedsman Ralf Hillmann, at Campamento Escoipe, in Argentina’s Salta region. This collection was made at two-thousand-eight-hundred-and-seventy metres. We sometimes have a few live plants of this species in stock, dependent on growth.

Trichocereus smrzianus (synonymous with Echinopsis schickendantzii, Echinopsis smrziana, Echinopsis smrzianus, Echinopsis walteri, Soehrensia smrziana, Soehrensia smrzianus, Trichocereus schickendantzii, Trichocereus walteri) is a columnar or clustering cactus species reported to grow only in one location – Chachipampa, Argentina. Quite variable in appearance, smrzianus can reach up to seventy or so centimetres tall, with a circumference of up to two metres. Once mature, this species displays between ten and fifteen ribs, broadening relative to the plant’s overall size, along with thin, yellow-whitish spination and large, white flowers. Its (edible) fruit is green, round and up to five centimetres in diameter.

Cultivation-wise, we treat this species as we do most of our other Trichocereus species; plant it in a well-drained, mildly-acidic to mildly-alkaline soil mix, watering only as the top few centimetres of this are completely dry and fertilising two or three times a year.
