Trichocereus skottsbergii | Live plant

(syn. Echinopsis chiloensis subsp. skottsbergiiEchinopsis skottsbergii, Trichocereus chiloensis subsp. skottsbergii)

We’re pleased to add this harder-to-find (at least in Europe) Trichocereus skottsbergii to our wide range of Trichocereus species, and hope you’ll find some space to grow some in your own collection! Available as live, well-rooted plants, grown organically in Spain.

Trichocereus skottsbergii is a columnar cactus from Chile, which is synonymous with Echinopsis chiloensis subsp. skottsbergii, Echinopsis skottsbergii and Trichocereus chiloensis subsp. skottsbergii. It’s closely related to Trichocereus chiloensis (being especially similar to Trichocereus chiloensis subsp. litoralis), with which it occurs growing naturally without any obvious hybridisation. Skottsbergii generally forms between sixteen and twenty-one ribs, while chiloensis ranges from sixteen to eighteen, but other than this it’s often difficult to distinguish between the two.

These cacti are easy and fun to grow, either indoors or outdoors in USDA Hardiness Zones 9-11. Plant in a mildly acidic to mildly alkaline, well-drained soil mix (we prefer roughly equal measures of cactus soil and perlite) and place somewhere in full sun to partial shade with a temperature of between 25-30°C. Only water once the soil is completely dry at the top and you should be enjoying this lovely plant for many years to come!
