Trichocereus scopulicola x Trichocereus bridgesii ‘SS02’ Live plant

(syn. Echinopsis scopulicola x Echinopsis lageniformis, Trichocereus scopulicolus x Trichocereus bridgesii)

Freaky Cacti is happy to to stock this great Trichocereus scopulicola x Trichocereus bridgesii ‘SS02’ hybrid! Live plants.

Trichocereus scopulicola (synonymous with Echinopsis scopulicola and Trichocereus scopulicolus) grows at roughly one to one and a half thousand metres elevation, in Bolivia’s Department Tarija. Unlike many other Trichocereus, it possesses unusually short spines, which means it’s that much more pleasant when handling them is required! A fast-growing columnar type reaching three or four metres tall and a maximum of around ten centimetres diameter, this night-flowering species is presumed to be a particularly close relative to Trichocereus bridgesii (with which it readily forms hybrids). It’s also related to Trichocereus pachanoi.

‘SS02’ is a much-coveted strain of Trichocereus bridgesii (synonymous with Echinopsis lageniformis, ‘Achuma’, ‘Bolivian Torch’), originating from America’s venerable Sacred Succulents. One of our favourite columnar Trichocereus species, bridgesii can reach up to six metres tall, forming blue-green stems of up to twenty centimetres diameter which branch from the plant’s base. An extremely distinctive plant, with formidable spines which can reach up to ten centimetres in length. Closely-related to Trichocereus pachanoi and Trichocereus peruvianus (‘Peruvian Torch’), bridgesii really is a beautiful cactus!

As with some other Trichocereus species, bridgesii has traditionally been used by Bolivian shamans in healing rituals, being regarded by them as possessing sacred and protective properties. Besides this traditional use, the species (along with other columnar Trichocereus) is regarded as a universal grafting stock, offering a high success rate and a long-lifetime of speedy and consistent growth.
