Trichocereus scopulicola | Live plant

(syn. Echinopsis scopulicola, Echinopsis scopulicolus, Trichocereus scopulicolus)

Here’s the latest of our popular cactus range – Trichocereus scopulicola (synonymous with Echinopsis scopulicola, Echinopsis scopulicolus and Trichocereus scopulicolus), available as nice and healthy, chunky unrooted cuttings from our mother plants. Better not dither, as we’ve only very limited stocks of these wonderful cacti (which are distinct from the ‘FR991’ variety which we occasionally sell)!

Trichocereus scopulicola occurs only rarely in the wild, but is from time to time found growing in Bolivia’s Department Tarija, at an altitude of roughly one to one and a half thousand metres above sea level. Unlike many other columnar Trichocereus, this form has unusually short spines, which means it’s that much more pleasant to handle!

Growing to three or four metres tall and a maximum of around ten centimetres in diameter, this night-flowering species is presumed to be a particularly close relative to Trichocereus bridgesii (with which it readily forms hybrids). Most columnar Trichocereus, including this one, are regarded as a universal grafting stock, offering a high success rate and a long-lifetime of speedy and consistent growth.

These cacti are very easy and totally rewarding to cultivate – all they need is a free-draining soil mix and enough water, light and nutrients. Easily grown indoors or outdoors in much of Europe, every self-respecting Trichocereus fanatic should have at least one of these amazing plants in their garden!
