Trichocereus scopulicola ‘FR991’ | Live plant

(syn. Echinopsis scopulicola ‘FR991’, Trichocereus scopulicolus ‘FR991’)

This is definitely one to grab while you can – rooted Trichocereus scopulicola ‘FR991’ cacti, cloned from our mother plants! Very limited stocks.

Trichocereus scopulicola (synonymous with Echinopsis scopulicola and Trichocereus scopulicolus) occurs rarely in the wild, but may sometimes be found growing in Bolivia’s Department Tarija, at an elevation of roughly one to one and a half thousand metres. Unlike many other columnar Trichocereus species, it possesses unusually short spines, which means it’s that much more pleasant when handling them is required! Growing to three or four metres tall and a maximum of around ten centimetres diameter, this night-flowering species is presumed to be a particularly close relative to Trichocereus bridgesii (with which it readily forms hybrids).

Most columnar Trichocereus are regarded as a universal grafting stock, offering a high success rate and a long-lifetime of speedy and consistent growth. They’re also often used in South America as a hedge plant and as spiky natural fencing against human or animal intrusion.

These cacti are very easy and highly rewarding to grow – all they need is a free-draining soil mix and enough water, light and nutrients. Easily grown indoors or outdoors (dependent on climate), every self-respecting Trichocereus fanatic should have at least one of these amazing plants in their garden!
