Trichocereus scopulicola cv. ‘Peter’ | Live plant

(syn. Echinopsis scopulicola cv. ‘Peter’, Echinopsis scopulicolus cv. ‘Peter’, Trichocereus scopulicolus)

This listing is for Trichocereus scopulicola cv. ‘Peter’, which we first received from a lovely and generous Hungarian cactus collector around the year 2018 or so. Available from our online shop as well-rooted cacti, deriving directly from that original mother plant (via cloning).

Trichocereus scopulicola (synonymous with Echinopsis scopulicola, Echinopsis scopulicolus and Trichocereus scopulicolus) occurs only rather rarely in the wild, but generally grows at approximately one-to-one-and-a-half-thousand-metres above sea level, in its natural home of Department Tarija, Bolivia. Compared with its relatives among the Trichocereus (bar the controversial Trichocereus cordobensis), these stately and regal cacti are very minimally-spined – and consequently much nicer to manipulate than its peer species!

Growing to a mature height of roughly four metres / thirteen feet tall and a maximum of around ten centimetres / four inches in diameter when left to grow unmolested, this night-flowering species is presumed to be a particularly close relative to Trichocereus bridgesii (with which it readily forms hybrids). Most columnar Trichocereus, including this one, are regarded as a universal grafting stock, offering a high success rate and a long-lifetime of speedy and consistent growth.

In our humble experience, scopulicola is certainly a very easy and fascinating cactus species to grow in any suitable garden. We grow our plants of this type (and many others) in a well-drained, mildly acidic to mildly alkaline soil mix comprising of approximately equal measures of soil and perlite (or a similar substitute). We heartily recommend watering these cool cacti only when the top few centimetres of soil mix has dried out completely (stick a finger in a centimetre or two and see how it feels), applying a light dose of fertiliser a few times during the growing season and avoiding frosts wherever practical.
