Trichocereus schickendantzii | Live plant

(syn. Echinopsis schickendantzii, Trichocereus fabrisii, Trichocereus manguinii, Trichocereus narvaecensis, Trichocereus shaferi, Trichocereus tenuispinus, Trichocereus volcanensis)

This one’s a real beauty! Trichocereus schickendantzii, grown from seed in the Spanish sunshine and available as live, well-rooted plants. Schickendantzii originates from Tucumán, in Argentina (although also grows wild in Bolivia too), and is synonymous with Echinopsis schickendantzii, Trichocereus fabrisii, Trichocereus manguinii, Trichocereus narvaecensis, Trichocereus shaferi, Trichocereus tenuispinus and Trichocereus volcanensis.

Trichocereus schickendantzii is a many-ribbed, branching columnar cactus which can reach approximately seventy-five centimetres in height, with each light to dark green-skinned stem growing up to roughly eight centimetres in diameter. Beautiful, tubular or funnel-shaped white flowers (up to approximately twenty-five centimetres long) bloom from the top of the column for several nights at a time throughout spring and summer. Delectably-scented, each plant may grow either a single flower or a small cluster of them. Yellow spines form to one and a half centimetres or so and the plant’s fruits are apparently quite tasty.

Occurring naturally in USDA Hardiness Zone 10-11 – notably in forest and grassland, at an altitude of between 1,200 and 3,200 metres above sea level – schickendantzii is a popular and hardy grafting stock and ornamental cactus. It’s also often used as one or both parents of many highly-regarded flowering hybrids, such as Trichocereus cv. ‘Orange California’. As with most Trichocereus cactus species, it’s easy to grow, with the essential requirements being relatively high humidity, a free-draining, mildly acidic to mildly alkaline soil and sufficient light (full sun to light shade), water and nutrients. Space the young plants roughly a metre apart, to allow them enough room to reach maturity.
