Trichocereus purpureopilosus x Trichocereus thelegonus | Live plant

(syn. Echinopsis purpureopilosa x Echinopsis thelegona)

This is a great Trichocereus purpureopilosus x Trichocereus thelegonus hybrid which produces gorgeous, whiteish-pink blooms! Available as live, rooted plants.

Trichocereus purpureopilosus (synonymous with Echinopsis purpureopilosa) is a white-to-pinkish-flowering cactus species which some authorities choose to place within Trichocereus lamprochlorus, others, to treat as a distinct species (as we do ourselves). Originating from Sierra de Cordoba, in Argentina, it’s a glossy deep green, columnar to creeping cactus species, which can reach a mature height of approximately sixty centimetres (with a diameter up to roughly seven centimetres). Yellow-gold spines are under one-centimetre in length and many hybrids (including intergeneric crosses) are produced using this popular species as a parent.

Trichocereus thelegonus (synonymous with Cereus thelegona, Cereus thelegonus, Echinopsis thelegona, Echinopsis thelegonus, Soehrensia thelegona and Trichocereus thelegona) is an attractive, Argentinean cactus, only rarely available on the European collector’s circuit. A branching, columnar species native to the north-west of Argentina, thelegonus has been observed growing in the provinces of Jujuy, Salta and Tucumán, at between approximately five-and-a-half-thousand and one-thousand-one-hundred metres above sea level. Reaching a maximum diameter of approximately ten centimetres and a mature height of just over two metres, this distinctive species bears yellow-brown-reddish spines up to two-and-a-half centimetres long. It blooms at night, producing long, white (self-sterile) flowers and round, reddish fruit (wih a diameter of roughly five or six centimetres).

Care-wise, we treat this Trichocereus purpureopilosus x Trichocereus thelegonus hybrid much the same as our other Trichocereus cacti. Basically, plant in a well-drained, mildly acidic to mildly alkaline soil, watering only when the top few centimetres of soil is completely dry to the touch. We also lightly fertilise our plants one, two or three times over the warmer months, tailing off watering over the colder, damper winter months in an effort to avoid encouraging rot or other unwanted issues.
