Trichocereus pallarensis | Live plant

(syn. Echinopsis pallarensis)

We’re incredibly excited to be able to offer these rooted Trichocereus pallarensis cacti, cloned from our mother plants. Only infrequently available previously, let’s hope we can propagate it enough to make it more easily accessible to interested collectors!

Trichocereus pallarensis (syn. Echinopsis pallarensis) is a very rare, often disputed species/nominem nudem, which appears to occur on the same continuum as Trichocereus pachanoi, Trichocereus peruvianus (‘Peruvian Torch’) and Trichocereus santaensis. Apparently native to only two or three regions of northern Peru (at an altitude of between two and a half thousand to three thousand metres above sea level), pallarensis was first described as a species by Fredrick Ritter around 1961 (although he also described it as a pachanoi variety!). As far as we’re aware, at least two distinct collections of this cactus have been recorded: ‘FR676’ and ‘FR1468’.

Very similar to pachanoi in appearance, pallarensis is a slightly stout, columnar green cactus which possesses thin, brown-honey-tan spines, up to roughly fifty millimetres in length. The flowers are white and are followed by fruit up to approximately five centimetres long, three or four centimetres in diameter and covered in grey hairs.

As with most Trichocereus cactus species, these plants are very easy to grow in USDA Hardiness Zones eight to twelve! Their main requirements consist of high humidity levels, free-draining (mildly acidic to mildly alkaline) soil and sufficient light, water and nutrients. Space plants roughly three metres apart to allow them enough room to reach maturity. Easily grown indoors in the UK and outdoors in much of Europe (although you may need to overwinter them somewhere sheltered)!
