Trichocereus pachanoi cv. ‘Torres & Torres’ x Trichocereus pachanoi cv. ‘Ecuadorian’ | Live plant

(syn. Echinopsis pachanoi x Echinopsis pachanoi, Trichocereus macrogonus subsp. pachanoi x Trichocereus macrogonus subsp. pachanoi)

We’re lucky to be able to share these impressive Trichocereus pachanoi cv. ‘Torres & Torres’ x Trichocereus pachanoi cv. ‘Ecuadorian’ hybrid cacti!

The mother plant of this excellent crossbreed is a coveted Trichocereus pachanoi clone originating from an apparently wild collection of the species from Northern Chile, made by ethobotanical researchers Manuel Torres and Donna Torres, at a relatively high altitude well outside of its currently accepted range.

This hybrid’s father, Trichocereus pachanoi cv. ‘Ecuadorian’, is a nice example of a ‘San Pedro’, bringing some fantastic genetics from Ecuador into play!

Trichocereus pachanoi (syn. Echinopsis pachanoi – commonly known as ‘San Pedro’) is a fast-growing columnar cactus found naturally in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador and Peru. A native of the Ecuadorian and Peruvian Andes Mountains, where it prefers an altitude range of around 6,600 to 9,800 feet, pachanoi has been used for by humans for more than three thousand years, variously as an ornamental, for religious divination and in traditional medicine (human and animal).

Pachanoi is a light to dark green cactus, growing up to twenty feet tall (although the highest recorded was forty feet!) under ideal conditions in USDA Zones 8-10. Its stems, usually forming multiple branches from the plants base, grow up to fifteen centimetres in diameter and generally possess six to eight ribs. Its origins in the Andes enable it to withstand far lower temperatures than can many other cacti and it’s consequently easy to grow indoors and outdoors in most areas.

As with some other Trichocereus species, pachanoi has been used by South American shaman in healing rituals and is regarded by them as possessing sacred and protective properties. Besides this traditional use, it’s also regarded as a universal grafting stock, offering a high success rate and a long-lifetime of speedy and consistent growth.

These hybrid cacti are very easy to cultivate – their main requirements consist of high humidity levels, a free-draining soil mix and enough water, light and nutrients. They can easily be grown indoors in the UK and Europe (outdoors too, if you’re somewhere warmer, such as Spain or Italy).
