Trichocereus macrogonus | Live plant

(syn. Echinopsis macrogona)

We’re pleased to be able to offer a limited supply of these lovely healthy and rooted specimens of Trichocereus macrogonus (syn. Echinopsis macrogona)! Closely related to Trichocereus bridgesii and Trichocereus pachanoi – and particularly close to Trichocereus peruvianus (with which it is presently a ‘contending’ species name, with many considering the two to be synonymous) – macrogonus is a hardy and fast-growing columnar cactus, hailing from Bolivia.

Blue-green to dark green in colour, macrogonus grows to roughly three metres tall and ten centimetres in diameter, sprouting brown to yellow spines which can easily reach up to five centimetres or so long. Its (self-sterile) beautiful white flowers are up to roughly eighteen centimetres across and bloom only at night.

As with the majority of the other columnar Trichocereus species, macrogonus is easy to cultivate indoors or outdoors in USDA Hardiness Zones 8-10. Germinating the seed requires decent light and a minimum temperature of 25°C to 30°C for success (we prefer the ‘Takeaway Tek’ posted in the Cultivation section of this website). Averaging approximate growth of thirty centimetres a year once it gets going, Trichocereus macrogonus can be easily propagated from seed or cuttings, requiring only fertile, free-draining soil and regular watering. This is definitely one of our favourite Trichocereus species – a very beautiful cactus!
