Trichocereus macrogonus cv. ‘Krunk’ | Live plant

(syn. Echinopsis macrogona cv. ‘Krunk’)

This latest addition to our shop is the gorgeous Trichocereus macrogonus cv. ‘Krunk’ – available as well-rooted plants which derive from a plant we first sourced from a Czech grower.

Trichocereus macrogonus (syn. Echinopsis macrogona) is a very near relative of Trichocereus bridgesii and Trichocereus pachanoi – and is also notably close to Trichocereus peruvianus (with which it is presently a ‘contending’ species name, as many consider the two to be synonymous).

A hardy, vigorous columnar cactus from Bolivia, it’s stems are a lush blue-to-dark green in colour, reaching approximately three metres high by ten centimetres or so in diameter. Thorns range through brown to yellow, growing to roughly five centimetres in length. Self-sterile, attractive white to whitish flowers reach roughly eighteen centimetres across, blossoming only at night.

As with the majority of the other columnar Trichocereus species, macrogonus is easy to cultivate indoors or outdoors in USDA Hardiness Zones 8-10 (avoid frosts!). Grow it in a well-drained soil mix of (approximately) equal parts soil and perlite (or similar). Water only as the top few centimetres of soil become dry to the touch and lightly fertilise a few times each year.

An absolutely marvellous cactus species which deserves a place in any decent collection!
