Trichocereus deserticolus | Live plant

(syn. Cereus deserticola, Cereus fulvilanus, Echinopsis deserticola, Echinopsis deserticolus, Echinopsis fulvilanus, Echinopsis fulvilana, Trichocereus deserticola)

We’re happy to offer this great quality Trichocereus deserticolus – available as well-rooted plants, grown from seed in the Spanish sunshine!

A columnar, branching cactus that reaches a maximum of approximately two-metres high, Trichocereus deserticolus is a pale green-grey colour and usually has between nine and thirteen strongly-furrowed ribs. Its thorns are thin and dark brown to deep red in colour, while its flowers are small (comparative to related species) and white-to-whitish in colour. Hairy, round fruits are considered edible to humans.

Dependent on who you ask, deserticolus is synonymous with Cereus deserticola, Cereus fulvilanus, Echinopsis deserticola, Echinopsis deserticolus, Echinopsis fulvilanus, Echinopsis fulvilana and Trichocereus deserticola. Native to Chile, it’s a species which now also includes Trichocereus fulvilanus with which its natural habitat overlaps as a subspecies. Other plants considered as closely or probably closely related to this species include Trichocereus chalaensis and Trichocereus coquimbanus. Although its type location is Antofagasta, deserticolus is also fairly commonly observed growing in the regions of Atacama, El Cobre, Paposo and Tocopilla.

Treat this species/complex as with the other Chilean Trichocereus species – plant in a well-drained, mildly acidic to mildly alkaline soil mix, watering only as the top few layers of soil become completely dry, and fertilise lightly two or three times each year. Keep it above freezing in winter (although it can tolerate brief spells down to -5° Celsius / 32° Fahrenheit, presuming it’s completely dry).
