Trichocereus crassicaulis | Live plant

(syn. Echinopsis crassicaulis, Helianthocereus crassicaulis, Lobivia andalgalensis, Lobivia crassicaulis, Lobivia grandiflora var. crassicaulis, Lobivia huascha var. crassicaulis, Soehrensia grandiflora, Trichocereus catamarcensis)

Another great addition to our collection – the interesting cactus species Trichocereus crassicaulis, available from Freaky Cacti as well-rooted, seed-grown plants!

Trichocereus crassicaulis is (or was) synonymous with a great many botanical names: Echinopsis crassicaulis, Helianthocereus crassicaulis, Lobivia andalgalensis, Lobivia crassicaulis, Lobivia grandiflora var. crassicaulis, Lobivia huascha var. crassicaulis, Soehrensia grandiflora and Trichocereus catamarcensis. It’s especially notable among its peers for being situated somewhere along the borders of both Lobivia and Trichocereus, making it a versatile and useful parent cactus for breeders hoping to produce hybrids able to cross with plants of either genus.

A comparatively small and slow-growing, clumping cactus which originates from northern Argentina, crassicaulis reaches roughly fifteen centimetres high, with a mature diameter – referring here to individual plants, not the clumps they form – of approximately ten centimetres. Similar-yet-differing in appearance from the related Trichocereus huascha, it’s a dark green cactus with short spination (up to around three centimetres in length) and absolutely gorgeous, orange-red-pinkish flowers. This species produces new pup from its base, which may then be rooted on as preferred.

We’ve been treating this species much the same as we do our other Trichocereus. Plant in a well-drained soil mix – we suggest equal parts mildly acidic to mildly alkaline soil and perlite (or similar). Water whenever the top few centimetres of soil dry out completely, tailing this off as the growing season draws to a close. Fertilise lightly two to three times each year and avoid frost.
