Trichocereus chiloensis ‘RS2297B’ | ‘Cacto’, ‘Khishka’ ‘Quisco’ | Live plant

Grown from seed originating from Comaryala, Chile, these Trichocereus chiloensis ‘RS2297B’ are some truly lovely little cacti! The species is known informally by names such as ‘Cacto’, ‘Easter Lily Cactus’, ‘Hedgehog Cactus’, ‘Khishka’, ‘Quisco’ and ‘Sea Urchin Cactus’. Native to Chile, chiloensis is also known under a bewildering array of synonyms, including Cereus chiloensis, Echinopsis bolligerianus, Echinopsis chilensis, Echinopsis chiloensis, Echinopsis litoralis, Echinopsis skottsbergii, Trichocereus bolligerianus, Trichocereus chilensis, Trichocereus litoralis, Trichocereus nigripilus, Trichocereus skottsbergii and Trichocereus spinibarbis.

Occurring in the wild along coastal regions of Chile (at between zero and two thousand metres above sea level), chiloensis prefers forests and hillsides on the edge of the Chilean Andes. A close relative of the magnificent Trichocereus terscheckii, chiloensis is (eventually) a tree-like, branching columnar that can grow up to approximately eight metres tall. Much variation is possible between the various forms of this spiny species, but its columns (traditionally used to make rain sticks) reach a maximum of roughly fifteen centimetres in diameter, with fierce, yellow-grey spikes up to about ten centimetres in length. Unlike many related Trichocereus a day-blooming species, chiloensis‘ fantastic white-whitish flowers appear from mid-spring to early autumn and grow to roughly fourteen centimetres in length.

Several beautiful chiloensis varieties are currently recognised, including: Trichocereus chiloensis var. australis, Trichocereus chiloensis var. borealis, Trichocereus chiloensis var. conjungens, Trichocereus chiloensis var. eburneus, Trichocereus chiloensis var. funkii, Trichocereus chiloensis var. litoralis, Trichocereus chiloensis var. pantholipes and Trichocereus chiloensis var. skottsbergii.

Trichocereus chiloensis is easy and fun to grow, either indoors or outdoors in USDA Hardiness Zones 9-11. Plant in a mildly acidic to mildly alkaline, well-drained soil mix (we prefer roughly equal measures of cactus soil, sand and perlite) and place somewhere in full sun to partial shade with a temperature of between 25-30°C. Only water once the soil is completely dry and you should be enjoying this lovely plant for many years to come!
