Trichocereus caulescens ‘RH0257’ | Live plant

(syn. Echinopsis caulescens ‘RH0257’, Soehrensia caulescens ‘RH0257’, Trichocereus camarguensis subsp. caulescens ‘RH0257’)

We count ourselves incredibly fortunate to have this rarely offered Trichocereus caulescens ‘RH0257’ in our collection – available as healthy, well-rooted plants from our shop…

These are seed-grown plants originating from material collected by Ralf Hillmann in 1989, from Santa Ana, Cercado, Bolivia, at two-thousand-and-fifty-metres above sea level. Note that the zero in ‘RH0257’ is critical when discussing these cacti, as there’s a similar collection number, ‘RH257’, on record (describing Huernia hadramautica obtained by other collectors).

Considered as vulnerable in its native habitat of Bolivia’s Tarija Department, Trichocereus caulescens – synonymous with Echinopsis caulescens, Soehrensia caulescens and Trichocereus camarguensis subsp. caulescens – is a light-to-deep green, columnar cactus species (growing up to approximately one-metre high) which tends to form sprawling clumps or groups over time. Its stems are covered with strong, comparatively lengthy, white-tan-reddish-brown spines (albeit in our limited experience these are shorter than those of, for example, Trichocereus deserticolus subsp. fulvilanus), with seasonal appearances of large, white-whitish flowers.

We treat our Trichocereus caulescens much the same as we do other Bolivian cactus species from the Trichocereus genus, such as the well-known ‘Bolivian Torch’, Trichocereus bridgesii. Plant them in a well-drained, mildly alkaline to mildly acidic soil mix – we use roughly half-and-half soil and perlite ourselves – and water only when the top few centimetres of soil are totally dry to the touch. Fertilise moderately two or three times during the growing season (at least two or three months apart, to avoid overdoing it) for maximum growth. Tail off watering over the colder months and avoid frosts and we’re sure that you’ll enjoy a long and happy relationship with your caulescens cacti!
