Trichocereus camarguensis cv. ‘JL’ | Live plant

(syn. Echinopsis camarguensis, Echinopsis caulenscens, Soehrensia camarguensis, Trichocereus caulenscens)

Named for and native to the small Andean town of Camargo (situated at two-thousand-four-hundred-and-fourteen metres above sea level, in the Chuquisaca Department of Bolivia), Trichocereus camarguensis is a thin, columnar cactus species also known by the synonyms Echinopsis camarguensis, Echinopsis caulenscens, Soehrensia camarguensis and Trichocereus caulenscens.

Pale to bright-green in colour and reaching up to sixty or so centimetres in height once mature, camarguensis tends towards creeping prostration in habit. This species bears thirteen to eighteen fine, gold-to-yellow spines, which grow up to roughly five-centimetres in length. A night-blooming cactus, camarguensis produces self-sterile, white flowers and round fruit (averaging a few centimetres in diameter). However, it should be noted here that not only is this plant often confused with its relative, Trichocereus strigosus (the latter’s taller, spinier and slightly differently coloured), but is also a popular parent for crossbreeding for their beautiful flowers, which are often a different colour from those of camarguensis.

As with its close relative the ‘Bolivian Torch’ (Trichocereus bridgesii), camarguensis is more prone to rot due to overwatering than – for example – Trichocereus pachanoi (‘San Pedro’). Plant in a well-drained soil (more minerals, less organic matter) in USDA Climate Zones ten, eleven or twelve (lower works too if you have somewhere to overwinter them). Make sure they’ll get a decent amount of sunlight  and that they have enough room for their roots to really stretch out, helping them to grow vigourously. Essentially, don’t overwater this species and avoid frosts and you should find it nice and simple to grow healthy, happy Trichocereus camarguensis cacti of your very own!
