Trichocereus bridgesii x Trichocereus scopulicola | Live plant

(syn. Echinopsis lageniformis x Echinopsis scopulicolus)

Trichocereus bridgesii x Trichocereus scopulicola is another great cactus hybrid, grown from Australian seeds. This listing is for live plants of this excellent crossbreed.

Trichocereus bridgesii (also known as the ‘Bolivian Torch’ cactus) can grow to roughly five metres tall and up to twenty centimetres in diameter. Found growing naturally in the high deserts of Bolivia, bridgesii (closely-related to the famous ‘San Pedro’, or Trichocereus pachanoi, and ‘Peruvian Torch’, or Trichocereus peruvianus) is an impressive columnar cactus, known variously by the indigenous populations of Bolivia as ‘Achuma’ or ‘Wachuma’ – although these names are sometimes also used to describe pachanoi and peruvianus too. Although similar in many ways to its relatives in the Trichocereus genus, bridgesii is a much skinnier type than most, which is also slightly more prone to rot if over-watered. It has evenly spaced spines that can grow up to roughly eight centimetres long. This is probably our favourite species of the genus and it’s easy to grow too (following a similar approach as for ‘San Pedro’, ‘Peruvian Torch’, etc.)!

Trichocereus scopulicola occurs only rarely in the wild, but is from time to time found growing in Bolivia’s Department Tarija, at an altitude of roughly one to one and a half thousand metres above sea level. Unlike many other columnar Trichocereus, this form has unusually short spines, which means it’s that much more pleasant to handle! Growing to three or four metres tall and a maximum of around ten centimetres in diameter, this night-flowering species is presumed to be a particularly close relative to Trichocereus bridgesii (with which – as you might notice –  it can readily form hybrids). Most columnar Trichocereus, including this one, are regarded as a universal grafting stock, offering a high success rate and a long-lifetime of speedy and consistent growth.

These cacti are very easy and totally rewarding to cultivate – all they need is a free-draining soil mix and enough water, light and nutrients. Easily grown indoors in the UK, every self-respecting Trichocereus fanatic should have at least one of these amazing plants in their garden!
