Trichocereus bridgesii cv. ‘La Paz’ | ‘Achuma’, ‘Bolivian Torch’, ‘Wachuma’ | Live plant

(syn. Echinopsis lageniformis cv. ‘La Paz’)

Trichocereus bridgesii cv. ‘La Paz’ is a wonderful example of the ‘Bolivian Torch’ cactus, originating from seed collected from around the La Paz valley in Bolivia (where this species is endemic). Grown organically in Spain, these fast-growing and sought-after cacti are sold as rooted plants.

Trichocereus bridgesii can grow up to around five metres tall, and up to twenty centimetres in diameter. It has evenly spaced spines that can grow up to roughly eight centimetres long.

Found growing naturally in the high deserts of Bolivia, bridgesii (closely-related to the famous ‘San Pedro’, or Trichocereus pachanoi, and ‘Peruvian Torch’, or Trichocereus peruvianus) is an impressive columnar cactus, known variously by the indigenous populations of Bolivia as ‘Achuma’ or ‘Wachuma’ – although these names are sometimes also used to describe pachanoi and peruvianus too. Although similar in many ways to its relatives in the Trichocereus genus, bridgesii is a much skinnier type than most, which is also slightly more prone to rot if over-watered. This is probably our favourite species of the genus and it’s easy to grow too (following a similar approach as for ‘San Pedro’, ‘Peruvian Torch’, etc.).
