Myrtillocactus geometrizans f. monstrosa cv. ‘Fukurokuryuzinboku’ | ‘Breast Cactus’ | Live plant

(syn. Cereus geometrizans, Cereus pugioniferus, Myrtillocactus geometrizans f. monstrosa)

Myrtillocactus geometrizans cv. ‘Fukurokuryuzinboku’ is a distinctive nursery-produced variety of monstrose Myrtillocactus geometrizans (the ‘Blue Candle Cactus’; synonymous with both Cereus geometrizans and Cereus pugioniferus). Known for its breast-like/melting-wax-candelabra-type rib growth, this Fukurokuryuzinboku cultivar is popularly called the ‘Boob Cactus’, ‘Boobsie Cactus’, ‘Breast Cactus’, ‘Tit Cactus’ and ‘Titty Cactus’.

Although the type species is a native of Mexico, the ‘Fukurokuryuzinboku’ variety originates from growers in Japan. Besides its tit-tilating(!) rib formation, this form is similar in many ways to the standard type, growing to a maximum height of approximately four-and-a-half-metres and comprising of blue-grey stems with a maximum diameter of roughly ten centimetres or so. Commonly minimally-spined, each no longer than (roughly) twelve-millimetres. Small, very pale green-white flowers appear once individual specimens are approximately fifty or sixty centimetres high. It bears dark red, oblong fruits – sweetly edible “Bilberries” – up to roughly two centimetres in diameter (although we’ve yet to witness this mutant form flower ourselves).

Predictably, we treat these plants as we do the majority of our other cacti! Plant them in a suitable, well-drained soil mix (we use up to roughly fifty-percent perlite or similar in ours), somewhere in full sun. Water only as the top layer of soil becomes completely dry, tailing this off over the colder winter months. We also recommend lightly fertilising your cacti two or three times each year.
