Myrtillocactus cochal | ‘Candelabra Cactus’, ‘Cochal’ | Live plant

(syn. Cereus cochal, Cereus geometrizans f. cochal, Cereus geometrizans var. cochal, Myrtillocactus geometrizans var. cochal)

Freaky Cacti is happy to offer the lovely Mexican cactus, Myrtillocactus cochal – available from our shop as live, well-rooted clones deriving from our original mother plant.

Native to Baja California, Mexico, Myrtillocactus cochal (synonymous with Cereus cochal, Cereus geometrizans f. cochal, Cereus geometrizans var. cochal and Myrtillocactus geometrizans var. cochal) is a most useful and attractive cactus species, also known as the ‘Candelabra Cactus’ (as are many other unrelated plants) and simply ‘Cochal’.

Reaching a mature height of up to approximately three metres / ten feet, cochal starts as a single, dark bluish-green column, before eventually maturing into a large, branching/sprawling cactus with a woody trunk. Each branch grows to a maximum diameter of nine centimetres or so, possesses between six and eight ribs and is – for the most part – rather minimally-spined. Fragrant, greenish-white blooms appear in summer and have a maximum diameter of roughly two-and-a-half centimetres once fully open. These flowers are followed by juicy, edible fruit, globular and up to approximately one-point-eight centimetres in diameter. This fruit is coloured purple-red and is reportedly slightly acidic.

Although less tolerant to frost compared to (for example) Myrtillocactus geometrizans (the ‘Blue Candle’), Myrtillocactus cochal is still an especially simple species to grow and care for. Grow it in a well-drained soil mix (we use equal parts perlite and soil in ours), in a suitable location receiving full sun, and water moderately, yet regularly, throughout the growing season. Fertilise a few times during this period and then avoid frost during the colder months.

What are you waiting for? Grab some new cactus genetics for your collection, or else for use as a comparatively fast-growing and resilient grafting stock in your propagation projects!
