(syn. Echinopsis ancistrophora)

Echinopsis subdenudata (the ‘Domino Cactus’) is a minimally-spined, green globular cactus that produces white flowers. Its round shape includes a singular green stem that has several ribs, areoles, and short spines that are barely visible. The flowers give off a pleasant fragrance and typically bloom in spring and summer. Native to parts of Bolivia, it occurs naturally at between six-hundred and one-thousand-eight-hundred metres / one-thousand-nine-hundred-and-seventy and five-thousand-nine-hundred-and-five feet above sea level. This species is synonymous with Echinopsis ancistrophora (under which name it was awarded the British Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit.

Also known as the ‘Easter Lily Cactus’ and the ‘Night Blooming Hedgehog’, Echinopsis subdenudata is a lovely little species, proven rather popular among the international cactus-growing community. Subdenudata prefers a well-draining, slightly acidic soil mix in which to grow (we use roughly equal parts soil and perlite for ours). It doesn’t tolerate frost and enjoys bright but indirect sunlight in hotter locations. Water only when the top few centimetres of potting mix are completely dry and make sure to fertilise a little two or three times a year for maximum growth.
